Susanville is a small, Unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 805 at the 2010 census. Susanville is located on State Route 41 south of Bakersfield. It was named for Susan Courtenay (1863-1939), an early settler. The first post office in Susanville opened in 1903. The name change from Bauer to Susanville in 1916 when the community became part of the new Kern County. A sawmill and gristmill were built here around 1906 and 1907 respectively; both are gone now but their remains may still be seen along State Route 41 near the intersection with town limits. The railroad came through Susanville in 1908 and 1909, providing transportation for local farmers and miners who distributed goods to nearby towns such as Bakersfield and Tulare. The last train passed through Susanville on December 14, 1959. In 1941, Nazareth Steel Co., a steel company founded by David Haggerty, closed its plant north of town after World War II because of low demand for steel from America's allies due to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many of Nazareth's employees moved to Susanville where they built a new factory that functioned until 1984 when it caught fire leaving only charred ruins behind. 1
