Susanville is a small town in the eastern Mojave Desert of California. It is located about 30 miles east of Los Angeles and about 80 miles south of Las Vegas. The population was 2,503 at the 2010 census. Susanville is named afterSusan B. Anthony, an American women's rights activist and founder of the National Organization for Women. The first permanent settler in Susanville was Elisha Beall, who arrived in 1874. He built a cabin on the site that still stands today. A post office was established in 1886, and the name changed to Susanville in 1925. The town center was developed around 1912 when farmers decided to move their operations away from downtown Los Angeles because of lack of access to water and transportation. It wasn't until 1957 that an expressway called I-15 came down the spine of the mountains between Susanville and Las Vegas which made it possible for people to travel between these two cities easily and safely without having to go through San Bernardino or Riverside County. Today, Susanville remains a small town with unique Historical landmarks like its old school building which has been moved twice (once into a new location) since it was built, as well as several other buildings that have been preserved throughout the years including a grocery store, bank, doctor's office, post office etc.. There are also several trails available for hiking or biking which run through various parts of town including lying down canyon bottoms past communities like Peñasquitos and Bella Vista before reaching Lake Mead near what used to be Hoover Dam back then.

Smith, who built a cabin on the east side of present-day Overland Road in 1853. A year later, Mr. and Mrs. John Sutter arrived with their family and began farming around what is now the downtown area of Susanville. In 1865, the town was platted and named afterSusanville, California – one of three communities founded by Captains John Crain and David Hale in 1866 as part of the new San Bernardino County government. The railroad depot at 5th Street and Overland Road served as the town's principal business center for many years until it burned down in 1908. The original school building also served as an important post office from 1902 until 1917. The current library building was completed in 1951 and is one of only a few example buildings built specifically for use as a library throughout California during that time period. Today, Susanville remains an important community with its active cultural life and businesses including several restaurants, two banks, four schools (one high school), two hospitals (one countywide), several churches and numerous civic organizations.
