Susanville was founded in 1887 by George Washington Smith, a rancher and entrepreneur. The town was named for Susan, the wife of Smith's business partner, John A. Susan. The first post office opened in 1890. In 1916 the United States Postal Service merged with the Western Union Company to form Western Union Telegraph Company. In 1922 the company changed its name to United States Telegraph and Telephone Company (USTTC). In 1933 USTTC merged with Northern California Telephone Corporation (NBC) to form NBCUniversal. On July 1, 1938, NBCUniversal merged with American Broadcasting System (ABC) to become ABC Incorporated. On May 15, 1961 ABC Incorporated became CBS Corporation after it bought out ABC's share in Westinghouse Electric Corporation (WEC). On August 29, 1971 CBS Corporation purchased Time-Life Entertainment Company from its founders William S. Paley and Leslie Moonves for $3 billion including stock in WEC which CBS completed divestiture of on September 12 that year. On January 1, 1978 CBS Corp renamed itself "CBS Entertainment Group" and on February 14th fired all offices of WEC except those located at 20 Rockefeller Plaza where it continued to operate as a separate subsidiary until 1992 when it was absorbed into CBS Corporation again
