Robertson.Robertson had plans to create a large citrus orchard and planned to name his community after himself - Robertsontown. However, before he could carry out his plan, he died in 1918 at the age of 52 years old.His son Clifford M. Robertson Jr., who succeeded him as Rancho Santa Clara's president, continued with the original plans but soon decided against growing oranges instead and developed a more significant ranching operation. He also built a number of small villages around his properties that served as local cultural hubs until they were all destroyed by fire in the late 1960s and early 1970s. By then, only one village still stands - Happy Valley Village - which is located on Robertsons' former property west of town on State Route 78
Susanville was founded in 1877 by George and Jennie Hanks as a small agricultural settlement near the junction of the Truckee and Bear Rivers. The town grew rapidly, becoming one of California's most important cotton towns. In 1916, Susanville was incorporated as a city.
