In 1984, Mayor Beall spearheaded effortsto rename Susanvale City after then-UCLA president James Earl Warren because he felt that it would be an appropriate way to recognize oneof Kern County's most prominent natives following his long term service there as mayor from1978-1984. In 1905, buttermilk farmers began ranchering and produced hay, woolens, butter and other dairy products. By 1912 it had become an incorporated City with a population of 220 people. In 1916–1917 Buttermilk residents supported World War I by manufacturing military supplies such as munitions and helmets. In 1912, the San Bernardino County Agricultural Council created a small farm in Susanville to provide food for local families. The council also donated land to the town for a park and recreation center. In 1954, the town annexation of neighboring unincorporated territory made Susanville a full-time municipality.
