The town became an agricultural center with several large farms providing woolen fabrics for northernwear companies like Levi Strauss & Co., Fidelity National Bank (now Wells Fargo) and Macy's Department Store. The cotton fields are now mostly gone but some remains are preserved at the Rancho Mirage Open Space Preserve near Palm Springs where visitors can hike or walk among cultivated plants and old adobe buildings dating back to 1893
