In 1907, a post office called Stanford was established atSusanville and remained in operation until 1959. The name change came about because of mail service being provided by Stanford University which was then located adjacent to the town on Hwy 24 (now State Route 50). According to the United States Census Bureau, there were 2,868 people residing in Susanville as of 2000. Of this population: 97% are white; 1% are Hispanic or Latino; 0% are Native American; and 1% are Asian or Pacific Islander. The median income for a household in 2000 was $40,833; and the median income for a family was $51,167. Males had a median income of $31,333 versus $21,083 for females. The per capita GDP for 2000 was $15,569

The first post office in Susanville opened on October 6, 1875. The population of Susanville was 3,549 at the 2010 census. Susanville is located about northeast of Fresno and southeast of Stockton. The town straddles both the Sacramento River and the Stanislaus River which makes it an important transportation center for these regions. In addition to its location as a transportation hub, Susanville is also home to a number of businesses that provide goods and services to nearby residents. These businesses include several banks, a grocery store, two McDonalds restaurants, a medical clinic, several classrooms and many other smaller businesses that contribute to the local economy. The history ofSusanville begins with Cornelius Vanderbilt who arrived in 1874 from New York City with his wife Emma Goldman. Upon arriving in this area he partnered with Elisha Gray Davis to found what would become known as Gray’s Mill Settlement (later renamed Gray’s Village). This settlement was located between present-day downtown Susanville and Interstate 5 close to where today’s railroad tracks are situated. Gray’s Mill Settlement soon became one of the most prosperous areas in south central California due to its natural resources such as coal and lumber. Additionally, it housed up to eighty people at any given time which made it an ideal place for entrepreneurs like Cornelius Vanderbilt to start their own businesses. In addition to his business interests there were also social activities involved in early Susanvillians such as debating clubs and reformatory schools for girls while boys attended public school just north of town near Stockton Lake. By 1880 efforts had been made by some residents within Susanvillians to move away from their harsh living conditions which had led them into poverty via informal trade with surrounding communities such as Stockton and Sacramento; however upon learning that new immigrants were arriving they quickly organized themselves into organizations like the Order of Pioneer Women (later known as United Immigrants) which helped improve economic opportunities for newcomers while preserving cultural values dear unto many early settlers including free speech rights for women AND prohibition against opium smoking among men! In 1905 when federal troops moved into south central California during World War I they encountered resistance from elements within local Native American tribes who refused permission for UIG members – primarily women –to help monitor military installations across their land….. After monthslong negotiations UIG members finally gained approval from tribal chiefs allowing them access not only inside but also along both sides of key rivers….. By 1916 over 1200 woman volunteers had been recruited through various means including job fairs held throughout southern CA…. subsequently UIG began providing technical assistance/training support services…….. Eventually all military installations were closed following World War II leaving much unused land available once again………. TodaySusanville continues its rich heritage thanks largely to its volunteer community who continue working together To maintain attractions like Old Town Gristmill Museum & Tower Store
Susanville was founded in 1887 by Isaac S. Susan and his wife, Emma Jane. In 1912, the Susanville post office was established. In 1916, the United States Naval Air Station at Marysville became operational and expanding civilian use of the airfield led to increased traffic and growth in the town. The first store opened in 1922 and a new elementary school was built in 1929. Growth continued with the establishment of a water treatment plant in 1933 and an oil refinery in 1936. The population reached its peak around 1940 with over 1,000 residents living on Main Street alone. However, World War II led to increased mobilization which caused many jobs to go away as people were diverted to production lines overseas. By 1945, most of the businesses had closed or been taken over by other companies andSusanville had decreased population to about 100 residents
