Susanville is a small city in Kern County, California. It is located east of Bakersfield and north of Fresno. The population was 8,906 at the 2010 census. Susanville has a council-manager government with a mayor and five commissioners who are elected at-large. The city is part of the Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Susanville" comes from the Spanish word "susana", meaning 'happiness'. settlement began in 1875 when Hiram Bowen Sr., an American fur trader, built what today is known as the Bowen House on land he purchase from Josefina Sanchez de la Torre y Rodriguez for $1,200. In 1876, James Purdy founded Jardine & Co., one of the largest mercantile companies in California, with plants in Susanville and Tulare. Purdy soon became interested in gold mining and set up shop on his new property at Pioneer Cemetery where he mined three feet (0.8 m) of gold per day from 1877 to 1886; it was his first successful operation within reach of San Francisco Bay! By 1889 his production had increased to 10 feet (3 m) per day; but by 1897 it had stopped because gold prices were falling due to overproduction by other miners and competition from South Dakota’s Gold Rush industry. In 1902 Mayor John Bigelow recommended that the City Council establish a waterworks system to provide water for residentships and businesses near Hearst Lake - now known as Susanville Lakeside Community Park - which would be later renamed Hearst Ranch after movie mogul William Randolph Hearst's purchase of most of Rancho Cucamonga rancho from Mexican settlers in 1912. In 1905 City Manager George Ahern persuaded Henry Ford to open a car dealership on State Street just south of town limits so Ford could sell cars door-to-door. Despite large investments by local entrepreneurs like Ahern, Susanville's economy stagnated during World War II becauseOf high demand for war materials abroad. In 1957 voters approved Measure H (the Water Pollution Control Act), creating the environmental protection agency Southern California Regional Water District (SCRWDA) to address pollution problems caused by agricultural runoff into nearby streams including Headwaters Reservoir. SCRWDA developed plans for redevelopment around Union Rd./Lakeview Ave., originally called "Townsite". After years of study, development started in earnest with demolition starting in 1966 followed by construction between 1967 and 1973 which included more than 200 homes, six schools, two shopping centers plus an office park

During this time there were also several major earthquakes including:

• "Shasta Quake" on January 19th 1969 which injured 56 people
• "Salinas Earthquake" on November 14th 1976 which killed 5 people<supersedes="" earlier="" note="" />
• "Fresno earthquake" on December 17th 1994 which destroyed buildings along Main St./Civic Center Dr.

In 1915, Arroyo Seco became a separate town and status quo ended up restored in 1916 when both towns consolidated into one municipality with their own police and fire departments
