He built a cabin on the property in 1875 and named it Susanville after his wife's sister, Susan Miner (1792-1866). In 1912, James and MaryAnn Fenton organized the first municipal government for their fledgling village with nine trustees. They also donated seven acres (24 m²) of land to the Village for a schoolhouse and community center. The post office operated at 5805 Railroad Street until 1984 when it closed due to low mail volume caused by population growth rates throughout Inyo County combined with increased travel demands associated with nearby Anza–Borrego Valley Regional Airport which opened that year. However, as new homes were being built closer to Highway 99W bypassing Susanville entirely – resulting in little postal activity there – the ZIP code 96216 gradually regained its former importance as an importantresidential area within much of rural Inyo County despite having no service available there any longer except through email or phone calls from people living outside the town limits . Today Susanville remains one of its original villages with nearly half a million residents within its borders thanks largely to high quality education opportunities available here including several excellent universities such as San Bernardino Valley College and Southern CA Polytechnic University which have campuses located just south of town along Highway 99W between Interstate 10 eastbound and Interstate 15 westbound; both these colleges are major employers here providing good jobs for many locals families whose incomes support their lifestyles outside of town limits during even very tough economic times like this current one!

In 1916, the American Railway Company built a line from Susanville to Paramount, California and created an industry based around transporting goods between these two points.
