Susanville, California is home to the world's second largest gun show. This annual event attracts exhibitors from all over the country and features firearms from all shapes and sizes. The town of Susanville was platted in 1849 and named for Susan, the daughter of James W. Susan and his wife Rebecca. The first post office was established in 1850, and the town grew to about 1000 residents by 1860. In 1872, a railroad station was built inSusanville, which helped increase the population even more. By 1890, Susanville had over 2000 residents and had its own school system. During World War II, the town served as axffection point for military supplies moving through California. In 1951, the town's only store shut down due to lack of customers; however, it reopened two years later with new ownership. In 1967, Susanville became an independent city when it merged with nearby Livermore. In 1984, Susanville annexed part of Rancho Cordova (now known as East Livermore).
