Susanville is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Susanville-Oakhurst Road. Susanville was founded in 1892 by citizens of Oakhurst and nearby villages as a summer home for wealthy business people who traveled to Yosemite National Park or San Francisco Bay.During World War II it was the site of an American military airbase known as Camp Springs. The post office has been in operation at Susanville since 1886. The first postmaster was Mrs. Ayer Capper Smith. The present post office building was built in 1928 and enlarged in 1959 formerly used by the San Bernardino Valley Telephone Company as their main switchboard facility for both Western and Southern California; it is now occupied by the Town of Susanville Library system. As a result of its location on Highway 395, close to Interstate 10,Susanville became one of the most important transportation hubs in Inyo County during its early years due to its many convenience stores and other businesses that did not have to move when the highway were constructed; these include White Sands Drive-In Museum (now closed), Shoprite Shopping Center (now defunct), Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (closed), and several dozen homes built between 1922-1927 around what are now known as Main Street and Upper Village Road. During World War II many local residents served in the United States Army or Navy including First Lieutenant John Sperry who commanded an armored car detachment which drove into Japan from Susanville on October 12, 1945 delivering foodstuffs supplies after Operation "Crossroads"
In 1869, Susanville was founded by Capt. George L. Seymour and his wife, Catharine. The town was named for the Susana River, which ran through it. Captain Seymour believed that the name would bring people to the town to trade goods with him and he was correct. In 1874, the first post office opened in Susanville and it continued to serve until 1925 when a new post office was built in nearby Tomball. In 1935, the town of Tomball merged with Susanville and it continues to exist as a separate municipality today.
