Susanville is a small town located in eastern Kern County, California. The community was founded on October 20, 1892 by the merger of two smaller towns, Susanville and Live Oak. The name Susanville comes from the Spanish word for "sunny place." In 1907, Anna J. Simpson opened the first store in Susanville. By 1912, there were nine stores in Susanville. The population of Susanville grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location at the junction of major railroads and its close proximity to Los Angeles. During World War II, munitions plants were built near Susanville and it became one of the most heavily bombed communities in Southern California. After the war ended, many residents moved out ofSusanville because of concerns about crime and redevelopment efforts that did not take into account their local cultural values. However, some residents remained until they left for other communities such as Livermore or Watson Beach after new zoning regulations were enacted in 1980 which limited development within certain boundaries around schools and other public services

The mine continued production until it closed down in 1978 due to environmental concerns about metal emissions from underground workings that persisted well into the 21st century.
