By 1872, there were fourgunmagazines operational within the town limits- all of which contributed to its growth during this time period. In 1886, a fourth gun magazine was opened by Alfred Payson Atchison at 401 First Street- which helped contribute to further development of Susanville as an important center for Gunrunning activities. In 1895, a fifth gun magazine was opened by Harry Elkins at 5th and Union Streets- which also served as an important hub for local Gunrunning businesses throughout the years. Throughout these years, different brothers operated variousgun magazines within Susanville- each contributing to its specific form of Procedure involved with Gunrunning activity back then (and still does today). These magazines helped spur economic development within town while also providing residents with access to quality firearms supplies/options unavailable elsewhere. The economy of Susanville is mostly based on services such as education, healthcare, law enforcement/security, manufacturing/commerce/agriculture, and tourism. Another important building from early days isthe Post Office which was constructed at 5 North Main Street in1880. It served as the town's center until 1912 when a new courthouse was constructed nearby and then functions as an official town hall still serving today despite being out of use for years due to lack of funding.. Another important structure from earlier times isthe Old Fortifications which were erected around 1880-1890 to protect against Native Americans attacking the townsfolk from upstream.. Susanville is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about 25 miles south of Fresno. The population was 17,045 at the 2010 census. Susanville is one of the most recent settlements in the valley after agriculture became popular hereabouts in the 1860s with much of what is now Susanville being developed as open space from what was once agricultural land. It has been stated that Susanville began as an agricultural village but soon emerged as a self-sufficient town by 1870 when railroad transportation arrived and industry grew up around it. In 1887, local women founded the first female bank in California and until recently, Susanville had been home to several schools including one for girls which closed in 1996.
