In 1922 local resident John Fenton set up a paper mill that produced newsprint products such as calendars and magazines until it closed in 1984; however much of the mill remains standing today including some original equipment still in use such as the water wheel that powered the machinery when it operated! In 1924 local resident Arthur Hanson started farming land northwest of town on what is now known as Hanson Lane; he later sold this land to General Motors who built their corporate headquarters there until they moved out in 2006). In 1934 local resident Harry Averill started a dry roasting operation adjacent to his farmhouse that still stands today (Averill's Own Coffee). Susanville has been home to many businesses over time including: soy processing plant (now owned by NXP Semiconductors), Ford dealership (now defunct), grain elevator (owned by Pacific National Foods), lumberyard (currently owned by Lumberjacks Inc.), hair salon/spa (currently inactive), Shriners Hospital Foundation gift shop/charity shop (closed Fall 2009) as well as Piegler's Drive-In restaurant which served up burgers until 2007 when they converted into an open air music amphitheater; all these businesses are now currently dormant or have been replaced by newer buildings or Arecibo Elementary School which serves students from grades K-8 jokingly nicknamed "the Chinese school". There are several tourist attractions located within or near Susanville including: The Allan Gardens Memory Preserve - home to one of Northern California's only preserved landscapes made entirely from agricultural & forestry materials donated by individuals & families since 1907, Butterfield Park - home to numerous gardens & picnic areas, Ishiwara Falls - flowing waterfall located just southeast of town off County Road 152 northbound between US 101 & CA 958; both falls can be reached via short trails leading from nearby roadsides (& They also serve delicious hot dogs!).
