Susanville is a small town in California, located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County. The name " Susanville" was given to it by General William Tecumseh Sherman during his march through the area in 1881. The first permanent settler in Susanville was James Henson in 1857. The population of Susanville peaked at 2,500 in 1910, but has since declined slightly. The history of Susanville begins with the founding of the townsite by James Henson. Henson and his wife, Martha Jane Duell, arrived from Illinois in October 1857 and soon began to build a cabin near what is now known as Main Street. They were joined by their son John A. Henson within a few weeks of their arrival. By 1860, there were eight residents living in Susanville: four men and four women. By 1870, farming had become the primary occupation for many people inSusanvilleandthetown became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Los Angeles and other nearby settlements such as San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. In addition to its role as an important transportation junction,Susanviletook on various other civic roles over time including being home to a post office (1872), fire department (1875), school (1877-79), and banks (1911). In 1911, the town saw its first incorporation as a city when it passed an ordinance creating local government under the provisions of the state Public Utility Code (). At that time, SusanVILLE had a population of about 1,000 people (). However, due to limited resources and fluctuations in local demand for goods and services (),thecitydeclinedand ceased operationsin1933 (). Today only some foundations remaining from when SusanVILLE had its heyday remain throughout much of downtown; these are marked by Art Deco style architecture dating back to 1933-34 .
Susanville was founded in 1853 by Captain David C. Susan and his wife, Mary Ann. The town was named for the Susana River that ran through it. The first post office was established in 1854 and the first store was opened in 1856. In 1865, Susanville became a city. In 1912, the city annexed the villages of Stairston and Peebles.
