Susanville is a small town in Northern California, located on the edge of the San Joaquin Valley. The population was 9,584 at the 2010 census. In 2009, Susanville was awarded the distinction of being one of "America's Top 20 Small Towns for Life". Susanville was founded in 1879 by John C. Fremont and his wife Catharine Briggs Fremont as a summer home for their five children. The community grew slowly until it had a population of 2,500 in 1925. The growth continued after World War II with the addition of many new homes and businesses. Today, Susanville has a population of just over 10,000 and is known for its picturesque downtown area that includes a large park and several restaurants and nightlife venues. The first settlers in Susanville were American Revolution veterans who had served in Captain John McLaren's company during the Siege of Saratoga Heights on October 17-19 Burgoyne’s army retreated from Saratoga Springs to rest at Yorktown following their victory over Howe at Saratoga on September 28, 1777. After they arrived back in America they built Fort Mather on what is now State Route 9 near where they lived while awaiting news from America about whether or not they would be allowed to fight against George Washington’s forces under Lieutenant Colonel James Kieft (1746-1815) during the Revolutionary War A post office called Susanville was established in 1881 by Wm Hickey with mail service coming daily from Stockton In 1925, when most small towns were consolidation into larger ones due to state mandates that smaller communities share resources more fairly, Susanville became an unincorporated community . It did not gain city status until 1978 . After major progress made by Town Manager Don Armstrong over many years including raising money for streetlights, building schools and sewer systems etc., City Council voted 5-1 to makeSusanville an incorporated city effective January 1st 1979 . As part of this incorporation process , mayor Don Armstrong appointed three citizens -largely retired auto mechanics Harry Wehner (Retired), Ron King (Retired) & Dick Linneman (Salesman) – as members Of City Council which gave them full authority to handle allcity activities such as budgeting streetscapes development planning public works Etc…..Today there are only two councilmembers remaining with no real control or power…..City officials feel very much outgunned because County Officials have always been able to come up with better plans & solutions than either Mayor Don Armstrong OR City Council can ever come up with…..The situation today reminds me alotof how things usedto be before County Officials got their hands on everything……….I think that if we could get some county engineers/officials here we might just be able to figure something out

However, during World War I the city experienced significant population losses due to military action and decay of mining operations. As a result of these factors, the city declined in popularity until it regained some level of prominence in the late 1940s as a bedroom community for Silicon Valley. Today,Susanville is again experiencing rapid growth as a commercial and residential center with many new businesses being built or expanded within its boundaries
Susanville was platted in 1887 by L. H. Dietz and named for Susan, the daughter of his employer, the Central Pacific Railroad. The town quickly became a popular agricultural center with its rich soil and ample water supplies, serving as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Sacramento to San Francisco. In 1929, Susanville amalgamated with nearbyMountain View to form the City of Susanville.
