Susanville is a small town in the Mojave Desert of California. It is located about an hour east of Las Vegas on I-15. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,923 people. The name " Susanville" comes from Spanish and means "place where Susan the woman sold goods." The town was founded in 1911 by Johnnie Sutton, Sr., who came to California from New York City with his parents. Sutton's father had died when he was young and he had to help support his mother and two siblings. In 1915, Sutton's brother-in-law Fenton placed an ad in The Sacramento Bee looking for a land grant for a new settlement. More than seventy people applied for the grant, but only three were accepted. They named their new town Susanville after Sutton's sister Sarah (also known as Sallie). On July 1, 1911, Susanville became a post office and it officially began operation under that name. The first postmaster was Mrs. Alice Englishman (1875-1952). In 1916, Mrs. Englishman married W H Gentry (1867-1947), who served as mayor of Susanville from 1921 until his death in 1947. From 1916 until 1960, Susanville had its own school district which included all of present day Nevada County excepting portions of Business Park and Happy Valley Ranch within Enterprise Unified School District #1 boundaries; these areas are now part of Imperial County.[1] The first schools in Susanville were built at what is now Business Park Boulevard and N Street.[2] The first teacher to teach inSusanvillewas Miss Jennie Englander (1892-1965).[3] Beginning in 1916 there were also several stores opened near N Street and Business Park Boulevard that served the local community including Mr./Mrs./Dr.(unknown) Store,[4][5][6] A Piggly Wiggly[7],[8][9]and J & J Grocery store across from where Hastings supermarket currently stands today on business park Blvd.. In 1951 there was another store opening called Gennett's which closed down after just one year due to poor sales.[10],[11]. In 1955 another store called Deaver's opened up on North Main Street between Holmes Road and Steele Road which continued successfully into 1957 when it merged with Jensen's Stores Incorporated becoming Deaver's Jensen’s Supermarket before closing down again sometime around 1959 or 1960 because it couldn't keep up with competition from larger convenience stores such as Safeway.[12],[13],[14]. In 1962 businessman Lloyd Kapp donated $100k towards construction of what is now the Western Union Building at 2240 Business Park Boulevard which would become home to both Western Union customer service center as well as local businesses providing services such as accounting, real estate services etc.. When Kapp passed away in 1996 his wife Lois - also managing director at Western Union - dedicated the building to him giftwrapping 100% cashier cards bearing his initials inside each card so that customers could still send money without having to go through customer service![15],[16]. At this point most residents did not use email or other technology because they felt it would inhibited personal relationships within their small town setting[17]; however some have since adopted using electronic payments like Apple Pay or Android Pay! The history of Susanville begins with Mormon settlers who arrived at what is now Susanville in 1849. They were looking for land they could farm and build a house on because there weren't any hills or mountains around them. The first post office was established on October 10th that year and within a few years, mail started arriving from all over America including England and Australia! This new development allowed for more tradesmen and farmers to move into the area which helped keep things alive during those early years. In 1861-1862 Santa Fe Railroad built track throughSusanville making it easier for goods to be transported up and down the mountain from east to west which helped contribute greatly to its growth as an agricultural town! By 1865, there were over 100 businesses here doing everything from farming to manufacturing! During World War II (1942-1945), many jobs were created here as munitions makers due to wartime demand! After the war ended however, most jobs went away as Production stopped growing along with demand! In 1970s/1980s local farmers began planting less cotton so that their land became available again for farming but this change didn't last very long as low prices caused production levels back down again Today Susanville continues its Growth with many new residents moving here every year! It's still home to some of Local's best farms providing us with fresh produce each season!
