Susanville is located in eastern Kern County and its core is on the east side of US 101 between San Joaquin and Tulare Counties. The first people who arrived in Susanville were those who came overland from Northern California in 1847. They named their new community after General Sam Houston's home village of Huntsville, Texas. According to some stories, General Houston had donated land for a town near his home in southeastern Texas; this new town was called Houston after he became president of that state in 1857. Others say that Colonel John Pemberton founded what would become Susanville when he purchased 160 acres (65 ha) of rancho land near Placerville about 1854-55 while stationed at Fort Tejon during Mexican–American War hostilities against Spain In 1861 Union soldiers burned down theadobe house which served as headquarters for Captain James Hickey’s Battalion of Californian Volunteers during the American Civil War (1861-1865). This event led to much discussion about how military activity might affect civilian life within Susanville since there were now two places where Union forces could be found: on one hand Generals Robert E Lawrence’s Division commanded by Major General Don Carlos UTADELLI right across US 101 fromSusanville to Porter Ranch; on the other hand Confederate forces garrisoned nearby Montgomery Station which included Fort Sumter One account suggests that many local citizens turned out Saturday night September 10th 1865 when Company C Oregon Volunteer Infantry Regiment under Second Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer disembarked from USS "Hudson" off shore at NorthUSS Hornet Reef just outside present day Susanville limits waters offshore from Yerba Buena Island northwest of San Francisco Bay . As soon as they got ashore all hell broke loose with almost fifty shots being fired by Confederate sharpshooters as company men scrambled into boats rowed ashore ..This particular engagement has been permanently associated with Forrest Gump where scenes were shot aboard USS "Hudson" offshore .. As mentioned earlier many Americans left for Mexico City prior to Ulysses S Grant becoming President due to fears gold fever bubbling among them like wildfire later diagnosed as cholera pandemic - so most everyone resident here already knew something was up even before it seemed overtly apparent Commodore Perry's Invasion didn't quite turn America around did it? In short folks hereabouts... Susie told me herself back then she knew darn well better than anyone what was going on but still went ahead & volunteered her services cookin' up meals @ Santa Fe Barracks kitchens while other ladiesfolk took care of things inside .... back then I never really understood why some folks acted like they did but I guess now we know..... kinda sorry we can't go back any further Susanvillians are known for their homegrown chili sauce made mostly from tomatoes grown on their own property along Big Piney Creek..
