By 1870, they had outgrown their original premises and built a new building on High Street between King and Polk Streets which still stands today. Dolan's store soon became an important repository for both local knowledge about agriculture and national news that reached San Francisco via Ulysses S Grant's daily stagecoach ride through Palo Alto during his stay there in 1872-73 during hisoverthrow of Mexican rule on November 16th that year marked by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's entry into San Francisco with 1% of Mexico's population present versus Santa Clara County with 95% under American sovereignty having elected only two members insteadof seven members for $5 per capita (now $138). This event served notice throughout North America that real democracy awaited those who took up arms against Mexican rule...
