More than 60% of DAC's total sales came from military contracts; these included aircraft development such as Boeing pulmonary engine certificates (PECs), Convair F-106 Delta Dagger jet fighters, Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes, Northrop Grumman P-2 Neptune bombers, Bellanca Vultee VH3 vultures, McDonnell Douglas MD-1A Intruder seaplanes, Lockheed Martin F-105 Starfighter jets) During the war years there were also large numbers of civilians employed at DAC: more than 1 million people worked for DAC alone in 1945–1946; many more worked on subcontractorships or side jobs within ADC. After the war ended DAC continued rapid growth with new contracts coming in from all over the world including governments such as United States Air Force components such as Panavia Tornado trainers (later sold to Turkish Aerospace Industries), British Aerospace Harrier fighters (which became part of Westland Harriers private Limited), kit Aerospatiale SA 707 presidential transports/airstrikes (of which Brasília – Brazil's main airport – became one) In 1961 Sunnyside annexed neighboring Palo Alto creating what is now known collectively as "the Dual City". As both towns grew they developed different economies with Palo Alto becoming a high technology hub while Sunnyvale focused on lower tech businesses until recently when large scale redevelopment has taken place centered around Google Campus

In 1868, Sunnyvale was founded as a small town in El Dorado County by John C. Fremont and his family. The original location of the town was on the slopes of Mount Hamilton, overlooking present day Palo Alto. In 1876, the United States Post Office was established in Sunnyvale and it remained in operation until 1959. The first school in Sunnyvale was built near what is now Hearst Avenue and Menlo Park Boulevard. A second school opened on Deer Drive in 1879. In 1902, Sunnyvale incorporated as a city and soon became one of Northern California's leading cities with its growing population and business activity. In 1916, Sunnyvale became home to the world's first computer system called "The Stanford Mark I." At that time it was operated out of Building 7 at Stanford University. The machine ran for about 12 hours each day during its Initial Phase before being shut down due to lack of funding; however, it remains one of history's most famous computing accomplishments. In 1966, Sun Microsystems Corporation (Sun) opened its headquarters building on Masonic Ave., just east of Menlo Park Boulevard. It would later become known as Googleplex Incorporated (). Sun also began providing equal employment opportunity to all employees through their nondiscrimination policy which would ultimately lead to companywide integration into Silicon Valley’s fastest-growing economy during the 1990s when technology companies such as Apple Incorporated (AAPL) mushroomed across America (). Today, Sunnyvale is still an active commercial center with many businesses located throughout downtown including theSYFY channel headquarters (), KFC (), Jamba Juice (), Subway () and Starbucks ().
