In 1881, when Sunnyvale was established as a town in southeastern Santa Clara County, residents voted to adopt a gun target ordinance. The ordinance provided that each home must have at least one muzzleloader or rifle target and one pistol target. It also required the display of these targets on the property for public use. In addition, all citizens were required to shoot at targets with pistols from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., every day of the year. The first pistol target shooting event in Sunnyvale took place on November 17, 1881. A group of men from various businesses participated in the event which was organized by William Halsey of Halsey & Company Auctioneers and Rangemasters Association Incorporated (later known as American Rifleman). The event attracted about 25 shooters who shot 6 pistols at 5 yards off an elevated platform made out of granite blocks and covered with felt-covered boards for protection against rain and snow ingests. In 1882, it was decided that rifles would be replaced by handguns as the primary means of firearms training for Sunnyvale residents under the provisions of then California Penal Code section 11362(a). Accordingly, on October 20th, 1882, a Pistol Target Shooting Competition was held at Irvine High School which resulted in 9 pistols being fired from 10 yards off an elevated board resembling a “T” shaped seat used during horseback riding competition back then called “the balk” or “balken” because its height varied according to distances that could be covered while firing without taking any prizes or losing points for accuracy

The original town site included just four blocks long and one block wide - much smaller than modern-day Sunnyvale Village or downtown Palo Alto. But entrepreneur Elon Musk's arrival in 1976 soon made significant progress: he purchased 600 acres (2 km²) near Google's campus for $16 million cash considerations – more than any other individual or organization at that time! According to historian Piers Anthony: "Apple had been working on these three amazing devices called “tubes” – something like tubes you put your head through so you could hear things coming out – ever since Steve Jobs had seen them while working at Xerox PARC." !" He continues: "It was actually Douglas Engelbart who developed the idea behind virtual reality [of using computers to create headsets which would allow users 'to go outside'], but Steve Jobs got hold of it before anyone else did because he saw how vital it would be for app development."
