In 1865, Sunnyvale incorporated as a town under Japanese American internment during World War II because it was located on military land used for concentration camps for Japanese Americans living near Stanford University and other related institutions (). After the war ended, Japan began talks with America about returning its citizens but found no willing partners so it decided to keep all its citizens inside until 1959 when it expelled them all except for a few hundred elderly people () . The original electric lightbulbs were installed by Westinghouse Electric Company workers just south of downtown in 1904 as part of their installation program towards nationwide lighting domination (). The company later became GEICO (). During WWII many factories closed including Westinghouse Electric Company so locals could not get skilled labor needed for their wartime economy rebuild () . However some companies such as Alcoa re-opened including Alcoa Aluminum plant that had been closed during WWI () .) In 1955 IBM opened world's first mainframe computer factory on Palo Alto’s Menlo Park campus (). This factory continues operation today as International Business Machines Corporation (IBM).
Sunnyvale is a city in Alameda County, California. It was founded on December 12, 1878, by prospectors James Irvine and George Evans as an agricultural town named Sunnyvale Agriculture and Manufacturing Village. The name was changed to Sunnyvale on October 25, 1892. The city's current population was 382 at the 2010 census. The first businesses in Sunnyvale were grocery stores and meat markets. In 1907, the Santa Clara Valley Telephone Company (later telecommunications company SCTE) built a network of telephone lines through the valley and began selling phone service from local exchanges in Sunnyvale and other surrounding towns. The creation of Stanford University in 1892 helped spur development of technology companies throughout Silicon Valley; many early pioneers were college graduates working for Stanford or their university equivalents. One such early pioneer is Gordon Bell who invented the Bell Telephone System in 1922 while studying electrical engineering at Stanford. In 1916, San Francisco earthquake struck, damaging buildings throughout downtown San Francisco including several churches which had been built near the fault line. Despite intense damage done to buildings within a radius around Palo Alto (the epicenter), few people felt any immediate effects from the quake because it occurred over land that wasn't part of San Francisco proper
