In 1853, Russian immigrants Nikolai Andreyevich and his wife Anna founded the town of Sunnyvale in what is now Silicon Valley. In 1874, Nikolai Andreyevich donated land to build an elementary school in Sunnyvale. It was called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Junior High School from its opening until it was renamed for him in 1984. The town of Sunnyvale grew rapidly during World War II due to the war effort. More than 1,000 people came to Sunnyvale from all over California to work at General Electric plants and other factories. Many of these workers are buried in the nearby Willowbrook Cemetery. Today, Sunnyvale remains an important community with many businesses and residents who continue their support of local education and community programs
The village of Sunnyvale was founded in 1879 by James Irvine and his family. The first post office was established in 1880, and the village became a town in 1893. In 1965, Sunnyvale incorporated as a city.
