The City Council overruled DSC's objections and approved the project in May 1975. On November 5th of that year, Mayor Brown announced plans to annex part of Willow Glen into Sunnyvale; however, this annexation was met with opposition from some in the community who felt that Willow Glen should remain separate and autonomous due to its historical importance as a predominantly Jewish community. On December 12th of that year, Mayor Brown postponed his plans until after New Year's Day so as not to conflict with holiday celebrations in nearby San Francisco.
In 1885, the first post office on Sunnyvale's west side was established. In 1902, the town of Sunnyvale was incorporated. The population of Sunnyvale grew rapidly in the early 20th century, and by 1920 it had reached 100,000 people. During World War II, Sunnyvale played an important role as a munitions production center; its residents helped produce over one million tons of munitions. "The Sign of the Dove" is a prominent landmark in downtown Sunnyvale. It was built in 1938 as a memorial to WWII veteran Don Lowrance.
