Sunnyvale, California is a city in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. The first permanent residents of Sunnyvale were Russians who arrived in 1853. They founded what became known as "The Town of Sunnyvale" on land they acquired from Rancho San José de la Frontera. The town grew quickly and by 1874 had a population of 5,000. A fire destroyed much of the town in 1876, but it soon rebuilt and by 1880 had an population of 10,000. In 1905, Sunnyvale named its first post office after William Halsey Fairbanks Sr., who helped found Stanford University in 1879 and served as vice president from 1893 to 1895 under President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1906, Sunnyvale incorporated as a city under the provisions of State law which allowed cities to exist only if their citizens approved a charter amendment (by referendum). When voters rejected incorporation by a wide margin two years later, Mayor James Hickey appealed to the California Supreme Court which upheld the rejection. On November 3rd 1908, City Council voted 2-1 to create an ordinance providing for annexation by Palo Alto pursuant to State law which then allowed annexations without voter approval provided that both cities agreed thereto. Incorporation therefore occurred on December 4th 1908 without any further struggle from either side; incorporation proceedings being handled solely through City Council action On January 1st 1912 Sunnyvale passed an ordinance establishing park boundaries including Mountain View Cemetery and forbidding development within those boundaries until such time that cemetery trustees could come up with plans for enlarging or improving said cemetery ensuring free access for all types of people regardless of social class or race (this ordinance still applies today). In 1916 Beverly Hills was annexed into Sunnydale making it one large city with its own government In 1932 Mayor John Larkin instituted zoning regulations limiting high-end housing development within some areas near downtown while creating new districts around other neighborhoods allowing more moderate properties zoned low income along with better schools and libraries within these zones attracting wellto-do families with children living elsewhere in larger townships nearby while still retaining zoning power over these areas Although eventually repealed due to public opposition this move towards responsible development started something that would eventually lead to heavier regulation during World War II
