On November 25th 1850, Jno Cranch Post Office opened with mail from Sacramento County. On December 2nd 1850, Wm Folsom erected a two story adobe building at 301 Northgate Boulevard that served as Postmaster until 1861 when it became office for Pahrump Valley District No 5 which included present day Rialto and Menlo Park On January 1st 1851 Augustus Kelley started a blacksmith shop at 321 N First Ave which served as business headquarters for about four years before moving to 624 S First Ave where he continued his business until 1865 when it moved back across First Avenue into what is now Rialto Elementary School In May 1852 Don Pedro Feliciano established "Amoretto Drugstore" at 204W 3rd St which became one of town's most popular businesses for many years until it closed in 1907 In September 1861 John Briggs started United States Dry Goods store #1 (later renamed Briggs & Stratton Co.) at 411 N Second Ave which operated successfully until 1911 when it closed due to fire In 1870s there were several small farms within walking distance or short car ride of downtown but they all failed during the late 1800s drought because no storage or transportation could be found

Fremont and named for Stockton Springs in Nevada. The first post office in Stockton opened on October 16, 1868, and was called "Fremont". The name change came about because of objections from residents of nearby San Leandro who thought that the new town would be called "San Leandro". The original town site included present-day Mountain View and parts of what is now Hayward. On February 14, 1870, the entire county of Contra Costa was divided into two districts: one for Oakland and another for Stockton. On November 3rd 1890, voters approved incorporation as a city by an overwhelming margin with 3236 votes to only 1 vote against. The first mayor of Stockton was William Brougham (1911-1920).
