Stockton, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 55,815 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Northern California and the third-largest city within the San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco and Marin County. Stockton's economy is based on agriculture, trade, transportation, and services. The first Europeans to visit what is now Stockton were Spanish missionaries in 1769–1770. They named it Rancho de las Pulgas because of its spiny palm trees that grew there. A small town called Mission Dolores was established in 1821 by Father José de Urquiza as a mission to serve Mexican colonists east of Sacramento Valley. The town became known as Stockton because of an event on December 29, 1838 when American Commodore Stephen Foegell arrived at Stockton Point with his ship USS Constitution and alighted onshore for supplies. He ordered all residents of Mission Dolores to head inland until he gave them orders not to return until he had left behind two cannonballs which he said would show that they had complied with his order not to fight American forces during the Mexican War of Independence. In 1851 voters approved a proposition to create a new city government for Stockton out of portions of both Mission Dolores and Rancho Lomassee; this proposal became law on April 2, 1852 when City Charter No. 1 was adopted by vote of the City Councilors present at that meeting from May 15 through July 12 inclusive (the last day partees were allowed). Stockton, California was founded on December 24, 1847 by John C. Frémont and his brother-in-law Manuel Miranda. The settlement was named for Stockton, California—the first site of the United States to be explored and claimed—because it lay on the route of a new gold Rush that had begun two years earlier. The town quickly grew into a busy commercial center in the northcentral part of California. By 1870, it had a population of over 100,000 people. The city’s growth led to complaints from nearby farmers about how much traffic they were being forced to handle on their roads. In 1875, Mayor James Henshaw commissioned surveyor George Pemberton to design a plan for putting an end to this congestion. Pemberton’s plan called for building radial streets around the city in order to reduce vehicular traffic between its parts and make it more easy for pedestrians and cyclists to get around. This effort was successful and helped spur further development in Stockton during the late 19th century. During World War I, Stockton became one of the most important military sites in California because it housed both American and British military hospitals as well as warehouses used by both sides for munitions storage. After the war ended, stock market prices fell due to low demand from American consumers but slowly recovered thanks to efforts by local businesses such as Alameda Fish Company and Southern Pacific Railroad (SP). In 1991, then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani proposed that Stockton become America’s “ cultural capital” after announcing plans for $200 million in upgrades that would improve its infrastructure including new libraries, museums, theaters and other public facilities such as an aquarium and convention center. Despite some opposition from business owners who felt their taxes would be higher if their community didn’t benefit from Giuliani’s vision, ultimately voters approved annexation into San Francisco Bay Area (SFA) effective January 1st 1998 under Proposition 8 which capped residency at one year with no ability for exceptions or rezonings without voter approval. Today Stockton is a thriving metropolis with over 1 million residents spanning three urban core neighborhoods: North County (), Midtown ()and South County (). It is also home to several Fortune 500 companies including Hewlett-Packard Co., Intel Corp., Qualcomm Inc., Oracle Inc., Facebook Inc., Apple Inc., Google LLC., HPE plc., Samsung Electronics Co Ltd., Toyota Motor Sales Philippines Ltd.–the world's tenth largest supplier of vehicles;[1] AirBNB HoldingsInc.—the world's largest operator of airbnbs;[2] City Colleges District -campus located within North County ();[3] Cal State East Bay -campus located within Midtown ();[4] UC Berkeley -campus located within South County ();[5] numerous private schools,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] government institutions like Kaiser Permanente Medical Services,[14] various parks,[15], [16], [17],[18],[19]]
