It is the county seat of Kern County and home to the University of Southern California and other major institutions. The city's elevation ranges from sea level near the bottom of downtown to over 6,000 feet (1,800 m) at Mount Shasta. The early history of Stockton can be traced back to 1849 when Mexican land grants were made to General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his brother-in-law, Manuel Miranda de la Vega. These grants included Rancho San Pablo Estancia which became part of what is now Stockton in 1851. In 1857, following Mexico's independence from Spain, San Francisco granted land east of Ashby Avenue including present day Stockton for $10 an acre ($3 per square kilometer). This land was known as Rancho Los Angeles.. After some discussion about where to put the town, it was decided on the east side of Main Street due to its proximity to railroad lines and easy access for goods arriving by wagon train. In 1865, City Council voted 3-2 in favor of moving from its original location on then current Second Street between Market and Sacramento Streets east onto what is now First Street due to lack of space within existing boundaries. The new site would include today's north end of MainStreet between Sacramento and First Streets; today's south endof FirstStreet between Sacramentoand Mission streets; Ashing Avenue; Tower Grove Cemetery; Arroyo Seco Creek - all currently inside the borders of modern day Stockton limits

Stockton, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California. It was founded on October 25, 1849 by Stephen Stockton and Alfred Pierce. The population was 485 at the 2010 census. The name "Stockton" comes from Spanishja, meaning "township." The first post office in Stockton was established on February 14, 1850. The town's first mayor was Wm. Fenton. Many businesses were established such as Humboldt Bank (now Wells Fargo), Pacific Gas & Electric Company (later merged into PG&E), First National Bank (later Canterback Mines Inc.), and Southern Pacific Railroad Company (later cancelled). Additionally, many new homes were built during this time such as the Cotton Gin Building which still stands today at 6th Street and Mission Avenue within walking distance of City Hall Plaza; The Griggs Building which housed the local grocery store until 1978; Assembling House which served as an early movie theater; Empire Oil refinery which operated from 1911 to 1922; United States Government Printing Office building constructed in 1916; Kress Machine Shop erected in 1907 used for printing government documents such as passports etc.; Jesse Jones' Creamery built in 1902 next door to USGS Survey Station #2 now known as UIUC Library; Lumber Yard buildings erected between 1860-1863 now housing UIUC Extension School offices etc.; Allis Chalmers Manufacturing plant built around 1918 producing farm tools like plows and hoes etc.; UIUC campus area extending out beyond present day boundaries into Elk Grove Village
