Stockton, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California and the seat of Stockton County. The population was 217,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north bank of the San Joaquin River in east-central Contra Costa County. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Stockton was made by Manuel Nieto on July 24, 1847 when he founded Rancho Sacramento del Norte with his brother Santiago and their father José. The first post office in Stockton was established on October 10, 1852. The town was named for Elisha Dickson stockman who helped build a canal through which water from Mission Viejo ran to agricultural areas near Modesto. In 1875, John Sutter arrived in America and founded Sutterville northeast of Stockton with land that he had purchased from Diego Rivera. In 1879, George Hearst built Castle Oaks Cottage as his residence within what is now Hearst Heights neighborhood and called it Castle Oaks because it resembled a medieval keep or castle. He offered free land to anyone who constructed a home within its borders and contributed $5 per acre ($100 per lot) to maintain it until 1925 when he sold it to the City of Berkeley for use as an open space park. In 1901, reports surfaced that Hacker & Hart had connections to organized crime so Mayor James Meehan negotiated an agreement with them whereby they would not sell products directly to consumers but instead would offer services such as lawn care or cleaning without having any ownership stake in the businesses themselves On January 12th 1915 headlines announced that 5 miles (8 km) south of downtown San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit Station my station called "El Dorado" opened up under new management being lead by Captain Harry Lyon after years of labor led by Supervisor Willis Hays After years of investment Captain Lyon leased El Dorado Railway Depot from Southern Pacific Railroad reaching passenger service on May 6th 1922 finally bringing new life into this old abandoned depot used mostly for storage during WWI The following year PC&E Electric Light Company bought all right, title and interest inland west side Freeways between Belmont Avenuenorthwest corner Main Streetand South Boulevardathwart First Streetfrom Controller Hiram Johnson Pingree
