On July 16, 1848, Stockton was founded as the City of Stockton by a group of businessmen and soldiers led by General George Richards. The city was named in honor of James Folsom, who had bought Rancho San Pablo from Mission San Francisco de Asís for $5,000 in 1846. The original town plat included a square shaped area that is now the downtown core of the city. The first store opened in what is now the Main Street Marketplace area in December 1848. In 1850, an irrigation system was built to improve crop yields and make Stockton more comfortable for settlers. In 1863, the California Central Railroad (later known as Pacific Railroad) arrived in Stockton and began serving the city. At this time, most businesses were located on Market Street between First and Second Streets. During World War II,Stockton became one of the largest American cities to support military activity with its large population of draft- dodgers and their families living near strategic points along I-5. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or relocated to other larger cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco.
