Stockton, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 298 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Kern County and the fifteenth most populous city in Contra Costa County. Stockton is home to both the University of California, Davis and the Kernwood College of Business and Management. The first knives were made by Native Americans who hunted game in the area now known as Stockton. Juan Bautista de Anza founded Rancho Santiago de Atacama in 1776 on what is now East Main Street near downtown Stockton. The town was named after José Gabriel Miranda y Costilla, captain general of Mexico under Bernardo O'Higgins during the Mexican War of Independence. In 1847, following Gold Rush Fever which killed over 50% of Sacramento's population, Stockton became one of the first cities to be settled in Alameda County when that county was created from part of Contra Costa County. A year later it became one of two counties (the other being Butte) within San Joaquin County when it was split off from Alameda County. During World War II, Stockton played an important role as a munitions plant with its large arsenal including a 5-story building housing some 3500 workers producing ammunition for every day for use all over North America and Europe; this plant closed down in 1954 but has been preserved as a museum today It also produced locomotives for numerous Southern Pacific Railroad lines until they were replaced by electric locomotives starting around 1960s In 1964, then Governor Ronald Reagan signed into law Californians For Life Act which provided tax breaks to businesses that discriminated against gays or lesbians. As part of this effort local gay rights group West Side Pride began organizing protests outside various state government offices throughout Northern California challenging discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity statewide beginning with demonstrations outside Reagan's office on November 4th 1984 led by poet Willie Brownstock From there protests escalated into riots taking place throughout Northern California against state sanctioned discrimination culminating on January 8th 1985 with Brownstock leading a peaceful march through downtown Los Angeles ending up at City Hall where he delivered his infamous “I Can't Take It Anymore” speech calling for change After years of struggle local gay rights activists such as Harvey Milk won election to represent San Francisco Bay Area Board Of Supervisors representing residents across different districts opposed to Proposition 8 (a ballot measure passed by voters legalizing same sex marriage) resulting in new dialogue about hate crimes targeting LGBT people coming out becoming more visible nationally not just locally On October 12th 2011 53 years after JobsMarket opened its doors here originated employee training program called "Jobsource"branding itself 'the world's largest provider human resources management services'. A mission was built at Rancho Seco in 1821, but it soon fell into disuse because of hostility from the local Indians. A Mexican land grant, Rancho Las Vegas de la Sierra, was given to José Joaquín Alvarado in 1835; development began on its eastern side with the arrival of Englishman George Stephenson in November 1849. Because of this early investment and settlers' preference for rural life, Stockton experienced relatively little growth until the mid-20th century when oil production peaked and hundreds of jobs were created as a result. During World War II many Japanese Americans living in Stockton were held during internment camps located near Bakersfield or Fresno. After the war ended there remained some Japanese Americans who had been forced into exile or internment camps throughout California until they were finally given citizenship and allowed to return to their homes after passage of Proposition 8 which outlawed discrimination against gay people nationally (the measure failed). The city's largest concentration of refugees came during the Vietnam War era when over 10% of all workers who came through town were Vietnamese refugees or their relatives
