It is the third-largest city in California and the sixth largest city in Northern California. Stockton is located on the San Joaquin River about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown Berkeley and 30 miles (48 km) north of Sacramento. The area that would become Stockton was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Contra Costa County at least 25 years before European exploration began. A group of Franciscan missionaries founded Mission San Antonio de la Esperanza in 1821, and General John C. Fremont established Fort Simons near present-day Stockton on May 29, 1846 to protect American settlers from Mexican forces advancing southward under General José Manuel Urrea. In 1849, Don Carlos Ferrer purchased Rancho Rinconada from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $2,000 (). Ferrer named his property "Rinconada" after Rincon Hill near his native Madrid, Spain where he had been born some years earlier. In 1850, Ferrer submitted an application to the federal government for a grant of 3 square leagues (10 km2 or 4square blocks), which was larger than any previous grant that had been awarded for inland Californias. The request was approved and Ferrera and his family set out to build a town on the site. He named it Stockton after himself and placed an advertisement in local newspapers asking for donations to support its construction. The settlement started small with just 10 residents when it became apparent that stockraising would be the primary economic activity there. By 1860, however, Stockton had acquired an additional 100 acres (40 hectares) of land surrounding the original plaza where people could buy goods they needed such as meat and produce while also renting space inside mission buildings or adjacent adobe homes for up to 50 people each). The growth of Stockton came largely due to two factors: immigrants who arrived during the late 19th century looking for new opportunities in America while also ensuring their safety when traveling through Mexico; and rail transportation which made it possible for more people to move around quickly without fear of being robbed orario
