In Stockton, California, the birthplace of the modern firearm, there is a rich history associated with firearms. The city was founded in 1849 by James Folsom and named after Lieutenant-Governor John C. Frémont. At that time, Stockton was part of Mexican California and firearms were not available to civilians or law enforcement. The first handguns arrived in Stockton in 1858 from San Francisco. In 1865, Captain George Prentice established a post office at the corner of Fourth and Doniphan Streets and began selling handguns to residents. The population of Stockton exploded in the 1870s due to waves of immigration and new opportunities for businesses in town. During this time period, gun shops became common throughout the city due to their ability to provide customers with quality firearms at competitive prices. Gunsmiths were also instrumental during this time period in helping people arm themselves for self-defense as well as hunting and fishing trips outside of town. In 1892, Mayor John Meeks outlawed handguns in the city limits effective immediately following an outbreak of yellow fever which had killed many citizens within months of each other across California. This move effectively sealed off Pistol City status for Stockton forever; pistols could no longer be purchased or sold within city limits without prior permission from mayor Meeks himself. However, this didn’t stop residents from enjoying rifles and shotguns out doors until 1911 when handgun regulation again re-emerged into policy followed by Mayor Clarence Darrow who championed restrictions on guns only being possessed by law enforcement personnel. Following World War I, gun sales resumed rapidly throughout America as countries reopened markets following wartime austerity measures dictated by President Wilson . In 1919 efforts commenced within Congress to ban assault weaponsuch as the Winchester Model 12 rifle , however these proposals never made it through legislation . By 1923 assault weapons had once again become a topic of heated congressional debate following reports that members of several Chicago gangs were using such weapons against local police officers ; 73 Americans died as a result . After much discussion among lawmakers over how best to deal with crime while still protecting public safety , finally bills passed both houses setting forth regulations governing assault weapons including requirements for serial numbers (a requirement still required today) , federally licensed dealers (to ensure proper public inspection ), background checks on purchasers/owners , magazine capacity (up to 10 rounds), and a 4 round limit on magazines size . In 1934 Congress repealed all federal Assault Weapons Ban laws enacted six years earlier; however state bans remain in place across the United States . The discovery of gold at Sutro Heights near San Francisco led to further development of this area with numerous mills being built including Jardine & Ballen's Watch Factory which began production on February 16, 1850; Union Carbide Company's brick factory built on Hearst Road; Ayer Coal Mines opened operations November 12, 1858; Southern Pacific Railroad's first line reached Stockton on December 15, 1850; First National Bank building constructed on North Street; Pemberley Drugs opened their doors March 2nd 1851 as one of two local pharmacies serving downtown Stockton during its early years; four boilers were used by American Iron Works beginning December 4th 1861 turning out railroad spikes for use around Santa Clara County until May 1865 when they switched to cast iron production In 1870 alone Overland Mail Line transported 3 million passengers through Stockton just making it one of six large Californian cities served by an Amtrak train service at that time In 1893 The Citizens Supportive Committee was formed providing financial assistance to local businesses during economic hard times caused by drought and Civil War currency shortages On November 5th 1906 Mayor John Wadleigh appointed James Galdon as City Manager after serving four months as headmaster at Silverado School District No 9 Galdon did not shy away from change which included raising taxes three times between 1907-1910calling them necessary for new park construction such as Fairview Park completed in 1911 followed by Recreation Field completed in 1912 He also successfully lobbied for passage of state legislation providing public schooling within city limits starting with Vass High School opening September 6th 1915 inside City Hall before moving into its current location across Broadway from City Hall facing Market Street

In 1876, the town was renamed after George Stockton, a U.S. Congressman from Californias Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad district who had served since 1868. The city was incorporated on January 25, 1911. The City of Stockton takes its name from George Stockton and not from Atchison or Topeka because those towns were part of the Kansas Pacific Railway Company at that time (the city took its name). One theory is that the name originated with early residents who thought that if they called their community "Atchison," then other settlers would think they were part of Indian Territory which wasn't actually within Mexican territory at that time. The original downtown area now includes much of what is today San Carlos Park and portions of Temple University and American Live! shopping center; these developments occurred during the late 20th century as growth in nearby towns led to an increase in traffic congestion around downtownStockton plowed ahead with plans for more development until a severe recession hit in 2009-10 derailed those plans. However, Mayor Lisa Salazar has championed revitalization efforts over the past few years including new development along Sacramento Street near Main Street in Downtown Stockton as well as major expansions for both American Live! and Temple University’s main campus along East First Street just east of I-5 north of Interstate 5 Exit 137A/San Francisco Avenue).
