Stockton, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California on the right bank of the Sacramento River. It was founded in 1846 by Jedediah Smith and named for Stockton, England. The city's population reached 100,000 in 1910. In 1946, it became an independent City of Santa Clara County. The surrounding rural area has since been annexed by other cities and towns including Dixon and Lathrop. The history of Stockton began with its founding as Jedediah Smith's Rancho acebo (1846). The original settlement was at what is now called South Street and West Avenue (now State Route 99) on the banks of the Sacramento River. A small post office was established there in 1847, but no stores or homes were built until after Jedediah Smith's death in 1851. He bequeathed his extensive rancho to his son-in-law William Clayton who laid out a town site on land owned by him and another partner, George Goodwin. This new town site included a millrace which may have been first used for grinding flour for baking goods when it opened in October 1850; three tanneries opened; two schools were started; eight families lived here; one family moved out to Livermore because of the high cost of living; two churches were organized: First Methodist Church (founded December 12th, 1850) and Presbyterian Church (born December 15th), both with prayer meetings conducted every Sabbath morning at 6am(). In 1857, developer Wm. Hahn subdivided part of Goodwin's original Townsite into lots for sale to farmers from outside the county limits. As early as 1861 people had begun searching for a location for a new city near San Francisco Bay where they could raise crops and sell their products directly to consumers rather than through local merchants or brokers
