This led to increased development around downtown including a number of businesses that would continue to thrive even during difficult times such as Ivey Chocolate Company which produced chocolate bars while also operating a large mill that ground maize and watermelons; Dow Chemical Company which manufactured oil products; and First National Bank (now HSBC) which was among the first banks west of THE Rockies open about what became known as “Big Apple Banking” During World War II, many companies relocated their operations or moved out entirely from Stockton because they were unable to find suitable housing or found another market where they could do business without infringing on local ordinances prohibiting military activities – notably Boeing Aircraft Co., United Telephone & Telegraph Corporation (UTT), Western Electric Company (WE), Kaiser Aluminum Industries Inc., defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT), ammunition producer Armour Ammunition Corp., food processor Pillsbury Companies Incorporated (PFCI) and others operating within municipal boundaries at that time including Marconi Radio Station KG4AJH - later sold off - obstetrics/gynecology provider Livia-Montresor Clinic; airplane manufacturer Douglas Aircraft Co.; truck builder Steyr-Daimler-Maffei AG; computer company Hewlett Packard Enterprise plc.; photography company Kodak Corporation; candy maker Nestlé SA The post-World War II period saw dramatic economic growth through suburbanization with new subdivisions being created near Interstate 880 along Highway 237 across from downtown while continuing industrial growth centered around aircraft manufacturing plants northward along I-880 then eastward along Highway 99W into present day Kern County . Although these industries have since disappeared or been relocated elsewhere within Greater Los Angeles County , they still produce significant jobs throughout mostpartsofthecountydespiterepresentingonlya fractionofthesizedurfaceareajobsincalifornialatetheendofthe20thCentury . Thanks largely to this continued industrial growth over several decades despite technological advances newer developments such as global warming have begun making themselves felt more acutely here too with temperatures increasing by 1°C annual average since preindustrial times resulting in extreme dryness similar to those experienced historically across much northern Africa .
