Stockton, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 167,824 as of the 2010 census. It is the seat of Contra Costa County government and lies across the estuary from San Francisco on the southern end of Richmond Bay. The first European to visit Stockton was José Altuve de la Rúa, who explored what is now Contra Costa County on August 20, 1821. In 1849, during Mexican independence War efforts, American forces burned Mission San Miguel Arcángel and plundered its contents including stored food for troops fighting against Mexico. In 1851–1853 Antonio López y Preciado built a cotton gin and distillery at the mouth of Salles Creek in present-day Campo Viejo. Stockton received its incorporation as a city on November 15 of that year. The original population numbered around 7500; however over time growth continued at a rate outpacing imagination and infrastructure could not keep up with population growth alone so public services were gradually phased out or supplanted by private enterprise starting with water rights granted in 1865 which led to stockyards being built along El Camino Real near First Street before becoming downtown after railroads came through town in 1889 Thereafter various industrial enterprises sprang up surrounding downtown such as breweries (1892), meatpacking plants (1901), Matchstick Manufacturing Company (1906), Wernher artillery works (1914) and Jardine Rubber & Rubber Company (1920). Stockton is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 153,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco and the fifth-most populous city in Northern California. A year later, Ulysses S Grant donated 640 acres (250 hectares) to build Fort Point at the mouth of Sacramento River where much later Ulysses S Grant became President of America
Stockton was founded on November 30, 1846 by George Stockton and his wife Lillie. The city is named for George and Lillie's son, Edwin S. Porterfield, who donated land to the city. The first store in town opened in 1848. In 1860, the first post office was established in town. By 1865, the population of Stockton had reached 30,000 people. The first railroad arrived in Stockton in 1869 and the city became a key destination for travelers heading eastward across California. In 1892, the City Council voted to rename the city after Los Angeles County Supervisor James Fenton because he had offered financial support for the development of what would become Stockton. On December 12, 1893, President Grover Cleveland signed into law "An Act to Establish a Municipal Corporation under the Laws of California" which created Stockton as an incorporated city with its own government and mayoralty system. On January 1, 1895 – just one year after incorporation – Mayor Arthur Waley announced that he would not seek another term because he felt he had accomplished more than enough during his time as mayor. On January 8th of that year Waley was succeeded by John Ahern as mayor with Acting Mayor Harry Price serving as interim Mayor until a new mayoral election could be held within two weeks when Ahern would take over full-time duties once again The stock market Crash of 1929 caused significant economic damage to Stockton and its surrounding area; however it did not cause any social or political unrest within the community like other cities hit hard by this recession such as Detroit or Newark NJ In 1936 City Councilwoman Zella Miers became first African American woman elected to municipal office in California when she was elected chairwoman of finance committee which studied ways to improve public services in order bring about racial equality among local government employees During World War II many residents servedmilitary including Chief Warrant Officer William McGrath Jr., who later became CEO at Lockheed Martin Missile Company headquartered in nearby Redlands In 1957 newly built downtown library opened with $4 million from local businesses who supported its construction In 1969 voters passed Measure M (the City Charter Amendment) increasing their representation on City Council from three members to five members . This amendment also provided for staggered terms so councilmembers could serve consecutive four-year terms instead of one continuous term
