The first people to live in Stanton were the Mono people who went there during summertime for fishing and hunting. The next person to live here was Juan Rodríguez who came here from Mexico in 1847. He built a log cabin on the banks of the river. After that he started farms and grew corn, beans, wheat, and other crops. In 1852 Isaac Morse moved to Stanton from Stockton and started a school here which he called "Morse's School." Later this name was changed to "Stanton Junior College" because it opened in 1918 as Southern Californian High School. After World War II many farmers left Stanton for new opportunities in California but some remained until they passed away such as George Ochoa who lived here until his death in 1984. In 1925 Fenton Steele set up a dairy farm near Stanton which became one of Kern County's most important agricultural businesses after he developed it into what is now known as Steele Dairy Products Incorporated (Fenton Steele Dairy). Other successful local businesses include Loyola Marymount University (founded by Father John Casteel), Hacienda Heights Golf Course (named after then-Mayor Alma Mater Arroyo), Boulevard Tire & Rubber Co., Donnybrook Farms Feed & Grain Co., Live Oak Winery and Distillery LLP (formed by Mayor Arroyo's husband Jerry Weintraub), Mrs.'s Cookies 'n' Creamery Ltd., Hollywood Casino Resort Hotel - formerly The Stardust Club -and much more... Today Stanton continues to be an important community with its own shops, eateries and schools
