Stanton, California is known for its many scopes and astronomy museums. The city was established in 1847 by George B. Stanton, a wealthy landowner and founder of the dry goods store chain Kress & Co. In honor of Stanton's role in early American astronomy, a museum was founded in his memory in 1907. Today, the museum features more than 100-year-old astronomical equipment from around the world including a 12 inch Newtonian telescope from England and a 54 foot reflector telescope from America. The Museum also displays examples of traditional telescopes such as the old Weiser reflector Telescope and an 1851 Cooke Reflector Telescope.

Stanton was founded in 1879 by Northern Californian pioneers as an agricultural town named for General John J. Pershing, who had been appointed to lead American forces during the Mexican–American War. The name changed to Stanton in 1907 when it became a city under the provisions of Proposition 6, which granted city status to towns with a population over 1,000 residents that did not file for incorporation with county government within two years. The first post office at Stanton was opened in 1881 and served until 1886. The first store closed in 1886 but reopened as a mercantile business called The Cotton Eagle Store & Mercantile Co.. In 1912, the City Council voted to rename the town after Edwin Hustedt Stanton, United States Senator from California (1912-1916). That year, he also served as Mayor of Los Angeles. In 1916 he resigned from his Senate seat to run for President of America and won election becoming only the second person ever elected President of America without having held any statewide office before! He never ran for re-election and died on November 5th, 1936 aged 77 years old without leaving any children or grandchildren behind him
