On March 10, 1861, during the American Civil War, Stanton's Arsenal Ammunition Depot caught fire and burned down killing 20 people including 5 soldiers from the U.S. Army Infantry Regiment 36th Calvary who were guarding it; this event is generally considered to be one of the deadliest acts of war in Northern California history The first post office was established at Stanton on December 3, 1856 by J.Harrison Gray with Wm Fenton serving as Postmaster until 1862 when Higginson took over In 1865, a railroad line called Telegraph Road became available through present day San Rafael and adjacent areas which led to rapid growth within the town with many new businesses opening quickly including several breweries (later absorbed into larger breweries), hotels/motels, stores (initially specializing in general store supplies such as flour and meat but later becoming more specialized) and schools (including an elementary school). Early residents built their homes either around or just inside what is now downtown Sanford Street where there were few public buildings then or still extant As late as 1880 about 60% of all businesses were owned by men while 30% were run by women
