Stanton is a small town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 3,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first white person to settle in Stanton was James A. Stanton who came from Boston in 1853 and platted the town on " lands grant" from Governor Manuel Michelini on July 10, 1855. The name of the town honor John Fenton Maguire who served as mayor in 1861-1862 and 1865-1866. In 1870, Anna Jaccard poisoned several people living near her stoneware kiln by accident while working on an experimental new type of pottery which she patented that year. Some believe that Anna Jaccard may have been responsible for creating the first "bad batch" pottery which caused some local residents to start throwing rocks at her house; this story has never beenconfirmed but it is remains one of Stanton's most famous historical landmarks. In 1860, Stanton became home to one of the largest water systems west of Sacramento when USGS Civil Surveyor George Wernher donated land to build a system that would provide irrigation for agricultural purposes around what is now downtown Stanton . The first stage of this project was completed in 1876 and included a dam across Fish Creek which provided drinking water for about 200 farmers and their families residing east of US 101 (the present day route 66). This project also involved building two miles (3 km) long road between Stanton and Healdsburg along Fish Creek - an important transportation link during those early days when there were no cars or trucks available anywhere near Stanton! In 1886, Leland Stanford Jr., grandson of General Cenci Stanford purchased 1/4 mile (.25 km) north corner lot east of Main Street from Mrs. Ann Kountz for $300 (). This piecemeal purchase led to Stonington becoming a separate incorporated municipality with its own board OF EDUCATION in 1907 (). Stanley Park began construction nearby on current Orchard Road just south of Second Street in 1923 and eventually occupied much more than half a block including Stanley Avenue between First and Second Streets - making it oneof America's largest open spaces! A large campaign was mounted by Mayor Edith Greene in 1954 to get the city seal changed from "Stonington" (now known as Healdsburg) to "Stanford". Despite opposition from some residents who felt that renaming their hometown wouldn't represent them very well after all these years they succeeded – with little fanfare – in getting the change approved by voters via referendum . Today, only 2% Of adult citizens call themselves "Stantonites", while over 90% identify themselves as Fresno locals . “Although we are hundreds [of] miles away from our humble beginnings as ‘Stonington’ town located east [of] I-680], we feel proudest when we think back on our history here at home … Our success can be traced back not just 400 years but many more too” – Mayor Edwin Smedley
