In 1907, Stanton became one of the original towns in Kern County when it was formed from parts of Kern and Mono counties. The town began as a farming community with cattle and sheep grazing on its property. By 1870, however, Stanton had become an electric generating station for oil production in nearby Bakersfield and other communities in Kern County; by 1914 all local electricity had been generated here by power plants built near Stanton by Southern Pacific Railroad Company and others. The early 20th century saw growth in manufacturing: machine shops were erected around 1920 to create new industries such as engineering services and automobiles; but this period also saw decline in population due to factors including lack of access to natural resources (oil reserves), World War II military servicemember flight patterns that disrupted agricultural production, social unrest (due to racism) and then rural exodus during the Great Depression which struck hardest at smaller towns like Stanton
