EBMD functioned as a regional government until 1974 when it became an independent municipality under state law. In 1990, EBMD absorbed portions of neighboring Hayward and Richmond municipalities to form Alameda County’s largest county seat – Oakland – making Stanton one of only three counties in California without county government oversight (the others being Ventura County and El Dorado County). Today, Stanton is home to a diverse population including many professional athletes who use its facilities such as Oracle Arena or Stanford University's Cardinal Stadium
