Stanton is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,636 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kern River and has a total area of just over two square miles (5 km²). Stanton's slogan is "The City That Dreamt". It owes its name to Frederick Stanton, an early settler. Stanton was founded by Augustus Holmquist in 1869 as a post office called Calaveras. The first town meeting was held on December 7th of that year. The name came from Captain George Barron who named the river for his birthplace in Sweden. After becoming an incorporated town in 1902, it adopted its present name of Stanton after Secretary of War John Sherman Stanton who donated land for the city. He also sponsored legislation that made California the 23rd state to ratify the United States Constitution on November 3rd of that year The city has experienced many changes throughout its history including annexations from Bakersfield and Hanford to make way for more prosperous cities during the 1920s; firestorms caused by arson within blocks of downtown during World War II; growth following Interstate 5 construction which created new residential areas and businesses; and increased crime rates resulting from new technology being introduced into local communities such as Internet cafes and strip malls which were suddenly opened up to criminals looking for easy targets
