Stanton, California is the birthplace of the modern American firearm. The town was founded in 1876 by a group of farmers who decided to create an arsenal and gunsmithing center in order to keep their firearms safe from raiders. Stanton is a city in Merced County, California, United States. The population was 10,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The city was named after John F. Stanton, an American politician who served as mayor of Fresno from 1898 to 1902 and as United States Senator from California from 1912 to 1916. In 1876, gold was discovered in what would later be Stanton and it quickly became a mining town on the Kern River. Mining continued until the early 20th century and by 1920 there were only a few remaining residents living in the city limits. In 1925, when President Herbert Hoover ordered all new towns in California to have a population of 30,000 or more within two years, Stanton was one of the cities chosen for this increased population growth. The city officially became a municipality on July 1, 1926 with a population of 11,500 people (). Stanton was founded by American Civil War veteran, Jesse Stanton in 1849. In 1850, the town of Stanton was located on the banks of the Sacramento River. By 1860, Stanton had a population of 235 residents and it became an agricultural center during this time. The first post office in Stanton opened in 1861. In 1865, Stanton was named after Ulysses S. Grant, whom its citizens honored with a parade and picnic that year. In 1868, the California Legislature approved the towns name change to honor General Grant and his wife Lucy Lawless Grant. The towns growth continued through the 1870s when many new buildings were built including a school and library. A cotton gin was also built in 1876 which helped make Stanton one of the most important cotton-growing areas in California. During World War I, Stanton played an important role as both an army garrison and staging ground for troop movements from Sacramento to various battlefields across America. After World War I ended, much of what had been achieved during its time as an agricultural center faded away as agriculture lost favor with more industrialized methods of production. However, local businesses still thrived until around 1970 when they were taken over by larger organizations
Stanton is located in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. The city was founded by John Fenton in 1853 and became an incorporated city on December 6, 1893. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 1915. Stanton's economy is based on agriculture, services and manufacturing.
