Stanton, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the San Joaquin River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Stanton were Juan Bautista de Anza and his men who explored the area in 1769-1770 while exploring part of their route from Yreka to Stockton. The first post office was established in 1876. The town was named after General John C. Fremont who fought in the American Civil War and died in 1847 at age 44 near present day Fresno, California. In 1905, Stanton became an incorporated city with a population of 1005 people. In 1960 it became a Rural City when it merged with Dunlap to form Stanton-Dunlap Township.[2] In 1971 it became an unincorporated community again when its status was changed to rural by county ordinance.[3] In 2002 it became an Advanced Manufacturing Center for Southern California through a partnership between SB&T Electric Utilities and Imperial Solar Inc..[4] The township has seen some growth over time as businesses have moved into town including: pharmaceuticals company Pfizer (now Novartis) which opened its new headquarters there in 1997; car parts manufacturer Jiffy Lube; Ford Motor Company's engine division; computer software company Oracle Corporation; petrochemical companies ChevronTexaco and Valero Energy Services; as well as other small businesses such as A&P Longspan grocery stores and several banks including Wells Fargo & Co., First Variable Bank, Citizens National Bank, Charter Financial Corporation, Sovereign Bank Resources Corp., Westside Credit Union. Population growth has been limited by high levels of poverty which still exists today despite efforts by township leaders to address this issue since before 2000[5][6].
