Stanton is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,471 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fresno Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Stanton comes from Spanish meaning "place of plenty." In 1847, prospectors discovered gold here and early settlers were mainly agriculturalists. The first post office in Stanton was established in 1856. A flour mill was built here in 1861 and the first store opened in 1865. A railway station was built here in 1903 and the town became an incorporated village on July 1, 1907. The oil fields that now make up much of Stanton's economy were discovered here during the 1930s and 1940s; however, production has not resumed since then. Today, Stanton features a variety of businesses including two high schools (Stanton East High School and Stanton West High School), a library, several churches (Church of Christ – American Baptist), a police department (founded 1935), two football stadiums (Stanton Stadium and Empire Stadium), as well as numerous restaurants and bars.

Stanton is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Kern River and about north of Bakersfield. Stanton was founded by Latter-day Saint pioneers in 1876 as a Mormon settlement on the banks of the river. In 1904, it became an agricultural center with over 100 businesses. By 1978, Stanton had shrunk to its current size due to the imposition of mandatory anti-rust forces within the local economy by then-Governor Jerry Brown's administration. Stonington High School is one of two high schools in Stanton; other students attend nearby Bakersfield City Schools or Chico Valley Unified School Districts. The first post office in Stanton opened in 1876 and served residents until 1908 when it moved to Bakersfield. The last post office closed in 1958. The first store at present day corner of First Street and Second Avenue was built about 1860 by John Cavanaugh for his brother George Cavanaugh (1815–1886) from Dublin County Ireland. James Laughlin & Son did business here until 1893 when they removed to Los Angeles because there were no railroad tracks near their farmstead location on Third Street between First and Second Avenues which they could operate without interference from neighboring farmers who claimed land around them that would be developed into farms should railways move through their area - another example illustrating how important transportation was then for early settlers throughout California! On July 16, 1899 a syndicate formed with fourteen other corn merchants under the name "Californian Corn Companies" with intent to establish a new grain terminal at Red Bluff on San Joaquin River pursuant to Act No 694 entitled "An Act To Provide For The Improvement And Storage Of Grain." When this project failed financially due to lack of interest within the Syndicate members - what followed was years of debate surrounding who should own/Build/Operate this massive new facility! Ultimately granted approval by Gov't Agencies on October 4th 1902 ( basically after much public outcry!) as noted above... only for it ultimately not materialize due to various factors such as disease brought over from Europe during World War I which impacted crop production & prices; also many farmers feeling that they already had capacity & didn't need yet another warehouse overflow! final nail i believe hitched finally coffin lid shut 😂 #stantonhistory
Stanton was founded in 1852 by George Stanton, a Confederate general and agent for the Freedmen's Bureau. The town became an agricultural center after it became part of California in 1850. In 1865, Stanton was the site of the first public meeting of American Indians when they were organized as the California Indian Mission Colony.
