Stanton was founded in 1879 by the brothers George and Jesse Stanton. The town was named after General John J. Pershing, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1916, the City of Stanton became an incorporated city with a population of over 50,000. The city is located on the western edge of Los Angeles County and is bordered by Arcadia to the north and east, Vernon to the south and west, and Alhambra to the northwest. The first residents of Stanton were two brothers from nearby Arcadia who decided to set up shop in what is now Stanton because they could not find any land that would allow them to grow crops. By 1881, there were three businesses in town: a grocery store, a post office and a millinery shop. The millinery shop eventually became known as Mrs. Gillett's Store which still stands today within sight of Central High School. In 1916, when Los Angeles County was created from portions of San Bernardino County, Stanton became one of its first cities with a population over 50 thousand people. At that time it was home to only about 10–15 businesses including several stores and two churches. However, by 1923 when Hollywood began boom times due to Proposition 8 (a ballot measure passed during the 1920s that increased taxes on unmarried couples), business had started expanding rapidly in Stanton so much so that by 1927 there were more than 20 businesses operating in town alone! Today many of these businesses still operate although their locations have changed over time - for example Mrs Gillett's Store has been relocated multiple times but remains located within sight of Central High School today! In 1924 Clarence "Butch" Hutton opened his first dealership which became one of the most successful car dealerships ever located in Southern California! Hutton continued this success until his death in 1988 at age 94 years old! Over his career he sold more than 100 cars including Ferraris, Rolls-Royces and Maseratis! Today Butch's Place continues as an automotive museum which is open every day from 9am-4pm for visitors!
