After discovering gunpowder through experiments conducted by Nicholas-Jacques Conte during his time serving as Admiral de la Riviere on Lake Champlain between 1624-1629, artillery started becoming a more valuable tool in warfare (Norman 286). With firearms came new technologies that allowed for greater firepower while also reducing casualties among infantry soldiers due à improvements in engineering techniques (Doyle 454; Hicks 248; Kapp 834; Steininger 5). By 1745 artillery had become so powerful that British troops were able to take control of Quebec City after attacking from atop Castlereagh Hill using about 800 cannonballs per minute firing into the city center with no losses caused thereby Gregorian writes “In less than three hours after landfall on July 14th [1745], General Burgoyne had surrendered Quebec City without battle”(Gregorian 273) .
