South San Francisco is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 27,959 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of San Francisco and is bordered by El Sobrante to the south and west and Parkmerced to the north. The first European settlers in South San Francisco were Missionaries Augustin de Valle and José de la Cruz who arrived in 1776. In 1821, Captain John Sloat charted what are now Fremont Street and Mission Avenue as part of his survey for Rancho Rinconada which later became part of South San Francisco. On July 25, 1852, Commodore George Fenton purchased from Juan Bautista Alvarado all of present-day South San Francisco from Mexican land grants totaling 6 square miles (15 km²). The site was eventually developed into a small town with its own government, militia forces and schools. On November 10th 1870, voters passed an ordinance creating a City Hall with seven precincts including Grantville Heights east of Market Street. On December 15th 1870 Mayor Lovell filled out an application for incorporation which was accepted on January 2nd 1871 by Secretary of State James Buchanan Johnston.. In 1886–87 Mayor John Sisk placed three scopes on prominent locations within town – one near Church Street (now Fillmore Street), another off Second Street between Masonic Square and Union Square North (now Geary Boulevard), while a fourth scope was set up atop Gough’s Hill outside the old City Hall building adjacent to Bancroft Park today (). In 1888 Reverend Luther Bliss built Whatcom School at Fourth and Spruce Streets; it took over classes from nearby Peralta High School when that school burned down in 1889.(Whatcom School moved to Woodside after that fire) After years of operation as a public high school it closed in 1972 due to budget cuts but reopened asParkmerced High School in 1976.) In 1896 Mayor Lorenzo Parks renamed Clayman Elementary “Luther Bliss” after Reverend Bliss; it remained open until 1978 when it too closed due to budget cuts but reopened as Parkmerced Middle School.) A Public Library opened at Sixth and Townsend Streets in 1907 servingSouth African immigrants working on sugar plantations during World War I.;(It closed 1975 when library funding moved away from SouthSanFrisco .) A movie theater also opened at Sixth Avenue and Townsend Streets serving primarily Southern Californian audiences throughout the 1920s before being converted into office space in the1990s. A grocery store also opened at Seventh Avenue between Townsend streets serves mostly Hispanic customers throughout much of this time period.,A post office opened at Ninth Avenue between Geary Boulevard Sutherland Place served primarily Japanese Americans during World War II before closing 1974.;An auto dealership originally located at Tenth Avenue opposite Wellesley Shopping Center began service providing mechanical services to residents there beginning around 1951 before moving their business full time to what is now Harbor Drive beginning around 1969 ..Today many businesses line MarketStreet such as Safeway Supermarkets Kroger gasoline filling stations numerous Chinese restaurants including Yuen Woo Food Company multiple Vietnamese restaurants several Japanese restaurants entire blocks are lined with shops catering specifically to various international markets

South San Francisco is a city in northern San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 97,619 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Northern California after San Jose and fifth most populous city in Northern California after Oakland, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Anaheim. South San Francisco became a city on April 25 of 1870 through an act of the California State Legislature. At that time it was located on the edge of what is now Palo Alto. The current site of South San Francisco was first settled by Anglo-Irish immigrants who came to the area from Dublin in 1847. They named their new settlement "Fremont" after General James Fremont who had commanded an American army in Mexico during the Mexican War (1846-48). The post office at Fremont was established on November 15, 1849, and remained open until it closed on March 13, 1861 due to lack of mail traffic. The first postmaster was George Wetherbee. In 1851 Captain John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at Point Reyes Station which served as a local base for his gold mining operations near Sonoma County. This coastal fortification helped protect nearby towns from attacks by Native Americans while also providing cover for Sutter's men as they mined copper and other minerals during winter months.NPS Files - SouthSanFrancisco Visitors Center In 1862 Captain John Sutter purchased Rancho Rinconada from Manuel Nieto for $8 per acre. He made use of portions of this ranch to build what would become North Beach on May 24th 1863 when he donated land to the City of South San Francisco which then built its first courthouse at 7 Neches St. On January 1st 1865 Supervisor Lorenzo Young signed an ordinance creating south side streetscape rental property bounded by Portsmouth Street on one side; Lafayette Street on the other side; Magnolia Avenue eastward; Turkman Boulevard westward. From here developer Edwin Jarvis started developing what would become Mission District with his own yards and streetscapes around 1906.
In 1886 Supervisor Lorenzo Young extended streetcars down Portsmouth Street into Market Square – thus making possible mass transportation within South San Francisco limits without having to go out onto Bay Bridge or I-280! Municipal funding led to development around Embarcadero BART station starting in 1964 which has resulted in much housing development around that area including some overlooking Market Square.

Sloat acquired title to portion of Alta California which included South San Francisco. Commodore Sloat named the town after his predecessor on the Board of Regents for University College of California, Dr. Benjamin Townsend Warner, who had died in office a few months earlier. The first post office opened in South San Francisco on December 6, 1871. The population of South San Francisco rapidly grew during its early years due to its convenient location and proximity to other towns in Alta California. By 1880, the town had reached a peak population with over 10,000 residents. However, within a few decades southward growth slowed and eventually stopped altogether because of various factors including development outside of the town limits and competition from new settlements established by Americans near Los Angeles and Fresno County
The area now known as South San Francisco was first populated by the Ohlone people. The first European to explore and settle in this region was Gaspar de Portolà, who explored the Bay Area in 1769. In 1846, General Antonio Loma named this area for José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla, 1st Viscount of Santa Fe. The city of South San Francisco was founded on October 25, 1849 by Lieutenant Colonel John W. Steuart and Captain William Fenton with help from Mexican forces under General Joaquín Carranza.
