South San Francisco saw heavy industry beginning with goldmining operations starting up around 1850 and continuing through World War II when many large companies established their headquarters here including ChevronTexaco (now Chevron), KFC (now Kentucky Fried Chicken), Southern Pacific Railroad Company Headquarters Building, Western Union Telegraph Headquarters Building/Telegraph Yard Annexe and IBM corporate campus located at 20th Street/Oakland Avenue North
